6 weeks Tue 4:30pm-6:30pm
starts: 8th Sept 2026 fee: £95
Have you ever wondered how fictional languages are created for films, games and literature? From fantasy worlds to sci-fi universes, constructed languages, often called conlangs, help make fictional cultures feel authentic, immersive and believable. This 6 week course introduces the fascinating craft of language creation and linguistic worldbuilding, showing how writers, filmmakers and game designers develop languages that feel natural and alive. Across six live online sessions, you will explore the fundamentals of conlangs and how they are designed. We will look at how languages are built from sound systems and grammar to vocabulary and cultural context, and how these elements help bring fictional worlds to life. Whether you are interested in linguistics, fantasy writing, worldbuilding, or storytelling, this course offers a creative and accessible introduction to the topic. Classes take place live online in small groups, creating an interactive and collaborating learning environment. Through guided exercises, examples from well-known fictional worlds and practical activities, you will begin experimenting with the building blocks of language creation to build and develop your very own conlang.
